About Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara

Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara — commonly known as the APY Lands — is a vast Aboriginal local government area covering more than 103,000 square kilometres of remote arid land in the far north-west of South Australia. Established under the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981, the Lands are freehold title held collectively by the Anangu people, comprising Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara, and Ngaanyatjarra communities. The APY Lands are among the largest Aboriginal-owned land holdings in Australia, stretching from the South Australian outback to the borders of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

The APY Lands are home to numerous remote communities including the administrative centre at Umuwa, as well as communities such as Pukatja (Ernabella), Amata, and Mimili. The landscape encompasses the rugged Musgrave, Mann, and Tomkinson Ranges, spectacular desert scenery, and significant cultural sites of deep importance to the Anangu. Visitors require a permit to enter any community on the APY Lands. The area has its own governance through an elected executive board, and both the Australian and South Australian governments have ongoing commitments to infrastructure and services for the communities.

Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA).
