About Kaltjiti
Kaltjiti, also known as Fregon, is a remote Aboriginal community located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far north-west of South Australia, approximately 1,200 kilometres north of Adelaide. The community is home to around 261 Anangu residents and sits on a relatively modest 24 square kilometres of arid outback country. Kaltjiti falls within the Namatjira state electoral district and the federal electorate of Lingiari, reflecting its identity as part of a vast network of remote APY communities.
Kaltjiti is best known for Kaltjiti Arts and Crafts, a community-based art centre that serves as a creative and cultural hub for local Anangu artists, producing works celebrated nationally and internationally. The community maintains strong ties to traditional Pitjantjatjara culture and the surrounding desert landscape. Access is via unsealed roads through the APY Lands, and visitors typically require a permit to enter; services are limited and centred on community needs rather than visitors.
Kaltjiti falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
