About Kalka
Kalka is a small Aboriginal community located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far north-west of South Australia, near the junction of the South Australian and Northern Territory borders. Situated approximately 700 kilometres by road south-west of Alice Springs and at an elevation of around 598 metres above sea level, the community sits within one of Australia's most remote and culturally significant regions. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 112 residents, and the locality covers just 2.6 square kilometres.
Kalka is home to Anangu people whose connection to this land extends for tens of thousands of years, and the surrounding desert landscape holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. The community is serviced by the APY Lands management infrastructure, with essential services accessed largely through Marla or Alice Springs. Visitors to the APY Lands require a permit, and the area is characterised by extreme desert conditions, vast open country, and a resilient community maintaining traditional culture and language.
Kalka falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
