About Mimili
Mimili is an Aboriginal community on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the remote north-west of South Australia. Located approximately 70 kilometres west of the Stuart Highway and around 380 kilometres south of Alice Springs, the community is one of six main settlements on the APY Lands. At the 2021 Census, Mimili had a population of 277 residents, the majority of whom are Anangu people with deep cultural and spiritual connections to this Country.
Life in Mimili is centred on Anangu culture, community, and connection to the land. The community is home to Mimili Anangu School, which provides education with a strong focus on both Western curriculum and Anangu cultural learning. Essential services including a store and health clinic serve residents, though the remote location means access to broader services requires significant travel. The surrounding landscape of the APY Lands — vast red-earth country rich in cultural significance — is fundamental to community identity and wellbeing.
Mimili falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
