About Black Snake
Black Snake is a sparsely settled rural locality in the Gympie Region of south-east Queensland, situated in the valley country of the Wide Bay hinterland approximately 20 kilometres south of Kilkivan and around 60 kilometres north-west of Gympie. The locality covers around 71 square kilometres, with its eastern and western boundaries following mountain ridges that enclose the valley where Coppermine Creek rises and flows northward toward Wide Bay Creek and the Mary River system. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 88 residents, reflecting the locality's character as a quiet, thinly-populated farming and grazing district.
Cattle grazing is the predominant land use across Black Snake, with properties making use of the valley floor and surrounding ridgelines. The locality also has a history of mining activity, with several leases in the southern portion of the area targeting copper, silver, and gold deposits associated with the Coppermine Creek valley. Parts of the eastern locality fall within the protected areas of Oakview National Park and Oakview Conservation Park, offering bushwalking and wildlife habitat. Residents rely on Kilkivan for basic services and Gympie for more comprehensive retail, schooling, and health facilities.
Black Snake falls under postcode 4600 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
