About Kilkivan
Kilkivan is a rural town and locality in the Gympie Region of Queensland, situated on the Wide Bay Highway approximately 229 kilometres north of Brisbane and 50 kilometres west of Gympie. With a 2021 Census population of 689 residents spread across a large area of approximately 157 square kilometres, Kilkivan has a very low population density characteristic of Queensland's agricultural interior. The town was established in the 1840s and has historically served as a service centre for surrounding farming and grazing properties in the Wide Bay–Burnett region.
Kilkivan offers a genuine rural Queensland lifestyle, centred around a small township with the Kilkivan Hotel-Motel, a general store, and basic services catering to the farming community and highway travellers. The town is perhaps best known for the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, one of Queensland's largest trail horse riding events, which draws equestrians from across the state each year. For broader shopping, medical, and educational needs, residents travel to Gympie (approximately 50 kilometres east), while Brisbane is within a manageable drive for less frequent requirements.
Kilkivan falls under postcode 4600 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
