About Cinnabar
Cinnabar is a rural locality in the Gympie Region of south-east Queensland, situated in the Kilkivan district along the Wide Bay Highway approximately 171 kilometres north of Brisbane. The locality covers around 155 square kilometres of grazing and state forest land in the hinterland between the coastal cities of Maryborough and Gympie, and falls within the Gympie Regional Council area. At the 2021 Census, Cinnabar recorded a population of 83 residents, reflecting the sparse settlement typical of this inland rural country.
The Wide Bay Highway bisects Cinnabar, connecting it to Kilkivan to the north-west and Kinbombi to the south-west, with land use dominated by cattle grazing on native vegetation and some cropping around creek systems. The locality is notable for its mining history, with mercury (cinnabar ore) mined in the area during the late 1870s and again in the 1930s and 1940s — a heritage that gave the locality its distinctive name. Cinnabar State Forest, a 388-hectare reserve, occupies the north-west of the area. The nearest town is Kilkivan to the north-west, with secondary services found in Gympie to the east and Murgon to the west.
Cinnabar falls under postcode 4600 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
