About Bochara
Bochara is a small rural locality in the Western District of Victoria, situated approximately 10 kilometres west of Hamilton within the Southern Grampians Shire. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 84 residents across some 58 square kilometres of open farming country. Settled as part of a large 19th-century pastoral run, the district was subdivided in 1901 into smaller family farms and retains its strongly agricultural character today, falling within the federal electorate of Wannon.
Bochara is perhaps best known in the region for Bochara Wines, a boutique vineyard and cellar door established in 1998 that produces cool-climate varieties including Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, drawing visitors from Hamilton and beyond. The nearby Bochara Homestead complex, which overlooks the junction of McKinnon Creek and the Grange Burn, is recognised on the heritage register for its historical significance. Hamilton, the closest major service town, provides shopping, schools, the regional hospital, and V/Line coach connections to Melbourne. The landscape is typical of south-western Victoria — flat to gently rolling grasslands used for sheep, cattle, and cropping — with Wannon Falls located to the south-west.
Bochara falls under postcode 3301 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the South-West Coast (Western Victoria) electorate.
