About Strathkellar
Strathkellar is a small rural locality situated approximately 8 kilometres north-west of Hamilton in the Southern Grampians Shire of south-western Victoria, around 249 kilometres from Melbourne. With a 2021 Census population of 84 residents spread across roughly 39 square kilometres of farmland, it is one of the quieter corners of the region. The area is characterised by open pastoral land, wide skies, and a deeply agricultural heritage dating back to the first closer settlement selections in 1907.
The locality is steeped in history, with the nearby Old Strathkellar homestead complex recognised for its heritage significance, including a well-preserved bluestone stable from the original Grange pastoral run. The Strathkellar Flax Mill, which operated as part of the wartime flax-growing effort in the 1940s, is another notable landmark. Residents rely on Hamilton for everyday services, schools, medical care, and shopping, and the surrounding countryside offers a peaceful, unhurried lifestyle well suited to those who value space, privacy, and a genuine rural setting.
Strathkellar falls under postcode 3301 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the South-West Coast (Western Victoria) electorate.
