About Cannie
Cannie is a rural locality in the Mallee region of north-central Victoria, situated approximately 15 kilometres south of Kerang within the Gannawarra Shire. Covering around 120 square kilometres, it is a sparsely populated farming district on the flat, irrigated plains of the Loddon River catchment. The locality sits in the heart of Victoria's productive dairy and mixed-farming country near the junction of the Loddon and Murray river systems.
Cannie is an agricultural area supporting irrigated dairy farming, cropping, and sheep grazing on the rich alluvial soils of the Loddon valley. The flat landscape is crisscrossed by irrigation channels and dotted with farm dams. There are no local services — residents travel to Kerang for shopping, schools, and medical facilities. The area is near several wetlands and lakes popular for birdwatching and fishing, including Lake Charm and Kangaroo Lake.
Cannie falls under postcode 3540 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
