About Quambatook
Quambatook is a small agricultural town in the Shire of Gannawarra in north-west Victoria, located approximately 302 kilometres north-west of Melbourne on the banks of the Avoca River. With a population of around 230, it is a tight-knit rural community that developed following the resumption of large pastoral holdings for closer agricultural settlement in the 1870s. The town has a long history as one of Victoria's important wheat and sheep producing areas, with farming still central to local life.
Quambatook offers the essential amenities expected of a small Victorian country town, including a primary school, general store and community hall, though residents travel to Swan Hill (approximately 70 kilometres west) or Kerang (around 60 kilometres south-east) for major shopping and services. The town is known for its annual Tractor Pull event, which draws visitors from across the region. The surrounding flat Mallee landscape supports dryland cropping and sheep grazing, and the region offers a peaceful, affordable rural lifestyle.
Quambatook falls under postcode 3540 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
