About Lalbert
Lalbert is a small rural town in the Shire of Gannawarra in north-western Victoria, situated approximately 329 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 44 kilometres south of Swan Hill. The locality lies about 50 kilometres west of Kerang on the Swan Hill–Donald Road, in the flat mallee and agricultural country of Victoria's northern plains. At the 2021 Census, Lalbert recorded a population of 138 spread across a large area of approximately 343 square kilometres, reflecting its sparse, agricultural character.
The name Lalbert is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word for the creeper that grew on mallee trees in the area, reportedly noted by explorer Major Mitchell during his 1836 expedition through the region. The surrounding district supports broadacre farming and grazing, and the community retains the quiet, unhurried character typical of small Mallee towns. Residents rely on nearby Swan Hill and Kerang for shopping, healthcare, and major services, with the locality itself offering a peaceful rural lifestyle well away from urban pressures.
Lalbert falls under postcode 3542 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
