Originally constructed in the 1970s and 1980s to house workers from the nearby Ranger Uranium Mine, Jabiru serves as the main service centre for the vast Kakadu region and has a 2021 Census population of 755 residents. The township sits within the Alligator Rivers region and is surrounded by the extraordinary wetlands, escarpments, and rock art sites that make Kakadu one of Australia's most celebrated World Heritage Areas.
