About Minjilang
Minjilang, formerly known as Mission Bay, is an Aboriginal community located on Croker Island in the Northern Territory, approximately 235 kilometres east-northeast of Darwin. It is the only settlement of any size on Croker Island, which lies a few kilometres off the mainland coast near the Cobourg Peninsula. Administered under the West Arnhem Regional Council, the community has a population of 265 residents and a high proportion of social housing — approximately 78 per cent of dwellings are publicly or community owned — reflecting the managed remote housing model common to Northern Territory Aboriginal communities.
Minjilang has deep historical significance as the site of the Croker Island Mission, which operated from 1940 to 1968 under the Methodist Overseas Mission. The community is accessible primarily by light aircraft or barge, with no road connection to the mainland, giving it an isolated yet self-contained character. The surrounding waters of the Arafura Sea support traditional fishing and hunting practices, and the island's tropical savanna landscape, abundant wildlife, and proximity to West Arnhem Land make Minjilang a place of strong cultural connection for its Mawng-speaking residents.
Minjilang falls under postcode 822 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Spillett electorate.
