West Arnhem is a vast locality in the Northern Territory covering approximately 30,875 square kilometres of Arnhem Land, one of Australia's largest Aboriginal freehold land areas. At the 2021 Census the locality recorded a population of 785 people, making it one of the most sparsely populated areas in the country at roughly 0.025 people per square kilometre. The region is governed through the West Arnhem Regional Council, headquartered at Jabiru, and encompasses important Indigenous communities including Gunbalanya (Oenpelli). It lies on the traditional Country of numerous Bininj and Yolngu clans whose cultural connection to this land spans tens of thousands of years.
The West Arnhem locality offers a lifestyle deeply connected to Country, with communities supported by local Indigenous land councils, government services, and a limited range of essential stores. Kakadu National Park borders the region and the area is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, ancient rock art sites, and dramatic seasonal landscapes of wetlands and sandstone escarpments.
