About Kunparrka
Kunparrka is a remote locality in the Northern Territory, situated approximately 61 kilometres east of Yuendumu and around 328 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the central NT desert region. The locality covers an exceptionally large area of 5,867 square kilometres and recorded a population of 121 residents in the 2021 Census. It falls within the federal electorate of Lingiari and the Northern Territory electorate of Namatjira, reflecting its position in the Indigenous community and land management areas of central-western NT.
Kunparrka lies in the remote semi-arid landscape of central Australia, characterised by spinifex plains, mulga scrub, and the vast open desert country of the NT interior. Social housing accounts for a significant proportion of dwellings, consistent with remote NT community localities in this region. Alice Springs serves as the nearest major centre for comprehensive services including hospitals, airports, and larger retail, while access to the locality is via remote outback roads and a private vehicle or light aircraft is the only practical means of travel.
Kunparrka falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
