About Mount Liebig
Mount Liebig, also known by its Luritja name Watiyawanu, is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory located approximately 325 kilometres west of Alice Springs, within the MacDonnell Region local government area. The community sits on the Haasts Bluff Aboriginal Land Trust at the western end of the Western MacDonnell Ranges. The 2021 census recorded a population of 240, up from 169 in 2016, spread across a compact locality of approximately 6.9 square kilometres.
Mount Liebig is one of the more remote Aboriginal communities in Central Australia, with residents living a lifestyle deeply connected to the surrounding arid landscape of the Western MacDonnell Ranges. The community has a health clinic with ties to Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation (Purple House), which supports community-controlled health services across the region. Alice Springs is the nearest major centre for comprehensive services, accessible by a long drive through remote outback terrain. The surrounding landscape is of significant cultural importance to the Luritja and Pintupi peoples.
Mount Liebig falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
