About Papunya
Papunya is a small Indigenous Australian community located approximately 240 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Home to around 438 residents, the community is predominantly made up of Pintupi and Luritja peoples. Papunya holds deep cultural significance and is internationally recognised as the birthplace of the contemporary Aboriginal dot painting movement that transformed the global art world in the early 1970s.
The Papunya Tula Artists collective, founded in 1972, brought international acclaim to this remote community and continues to operate today. Daily life in Papunya is shaped by strong cultural traditions, the challenges of remote living, and the enduring connection to Country. The community has a school and basic health and community services, with Alice Springs serving as the nearest major centre for additional services and supplies.
