About Penneshaw
Penneshaw is a coastal township on the north-eastern shores of the Dudley Peninsula on Kangaroo Island, approximately 107 kilometres south of Adelaide as the crow flies, and governed by the Kangaroo Island Council. With a 2021 Census population of 269 residents across a compact 5.1 square kilometres, it punches above its size as the island's main gateway, serving as the principal ferry terminal with regular SeaLink vehicular services crossing Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The township occupies a scenic harbourside setting overlooking the passage towards the South Australian mainland.
Penneshaw is home to a Maritime and Folk Museum and is a popular destination for evening guided tours to a resident colony of little penguins — the only penguin species to breed in Australian waters. The waterfront strip provides cafés, accommodation, and basic services catering to residents and the steady flow of visitors arriving by ferry. While day-to-day needs can be met locally, the island's main regional centre of Kingscote is approximately 45 kilometres to the west and offers a larger range of shops, schools, and medical services.
Penneshaw falls under postcode 5222 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
