About Pipalyatjara
Pipalyatjara is a remote Aboriginal community located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the far north-west of South Australia, approximately 200 kilometres south-west of Uluru and 20 kilometres east of the Western Australian border. The community is governed under the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act and is one of six main communities on "The Lands", alongside Amata, Pukatja, Kaltjiti, Indulkana, and Mimili. Residents are predominantly Anangu people whose first language is Pitjantjatjara, living in one of Australia's most geographically isolated communities at an elevation of around 652 metres in the Tomkinson Range.
Life in Pipalyatjara centres on Anangu culture, connection to Country, and community services delivered in partnership with the South Australian Government. Access is via unsealed roads through the APY Lands, and the community has no public transport connections — a private vehicle or community transport is essential. A community store provides basic groceries and supplies, while health and educational services are delivered through the APY Lands service network. The nearest larger town with expanded services is Marla, approximately 280 kilometres to the east on the Stuart Highway.
Pipalyatjara falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
