About Ravensthorpe
Ravensthorpe is a small town in Western Australia's south coast region, located approximately 541 kilometres south-east of Perth and around 40 kilometres inland from the Southern Ocean, within the Shire of Ravensthorpe. The town sits at an elevation of 232 metres on the edge of the Ravensthorpe Range and has a 2021 Census population of approximately 580 people. Its history dates to the 1890s gold rush and subsequent copper smelting era, giving it one of the oldest European settlement histories in WA's south coast region.
Ravensthorpe serves as the main service centre for a large and sparsely populated shire, offering a general store, fuel, accommodation, and essential services for both residents and travellers on the South Coast Highway. The town is a gateway to the Fitzgerald River National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its extraordinary wildflower diversity and coastal wilderness. The surrounding agricultural land supports cereal cropping and sheep grazing, while historic mining activity — including a nickel mine — has shaped the town's economic character over the decades.
Ravensthorpe falls under postcode 6346 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
