West River is a large, sparsely populated rural locality in the Shire of Ravensthorpe, in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, approximately 394 kilometres south-east of Perth. The locality covers an expansive 1,132 square kilometres of farmland and native bushland, with the South Coast Highway passing through from west to east. With a population of approximately 71 at the 2021 Census, West River is one of the most lightly settled localities in the region, and is home to farming families and rural properties spread across a wide and remote landscape.
West River borders the Fitzgerald River National Park to the south, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its extraordinary wildflower diversity, rugged coastal scenery, and endemic flora. The townsite of Fitzgerald lies to the west of the locality. Residents rely on the town of Ravensthorpe, situated nearby, for essential services including fuel, general stores, schools, and medical care. The broader Ravensthorpe Shire is also known for its mining history and access to the stunning natural landscapes of the South Coast, including Hopetoun and the Fitzgerald River National Park, making it a destination for nature-based tourism.
