About Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa, also known by its Arrernte name Ltyentye Apurte, is a remote Aboriginal community in the MacDonnell Shire of the Northern Territory, located approximately 80 kilometres south-east of Alice Springs. The community had a population of 609 at the 2021 Census and covers a vast area of around 1,247 square kilometres of arid Central Australian landscape. The locality was established in 1952 as a Catholic mission run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, and in 1976 administration was passed to an Aboriginal land trust, recognising the traditional ownership of the Arrernte people.
Santa Teresa is a culturally significant community with deep connections to Arrernte Country and traditions. The Keringke Arts Centre, established in 1989, is an important cultural institution where community artists — particularly women — produce distinctive artworks including painted crosses that are exported to Catholic churches around the world. A day school remains operational within the community, continuing the educational legacy of the original mission. Life in Santa Teresa reflects the remote character of Central Australia, with essential services centred within the community and Alice Springs providing access to broader medical, retail, and administrative facilities.
Santa Teresa falls under postcode 872 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Namatjira electorate.
