About Swansea
Swansea is a historic coastal town on Tasmania's east coast, situated on the north-west shore of Great Oyster Bay within the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council area, approximately 134 kilometres north-east of Hobart. With a population of 997 at the 2021 Census, Swansea is a small but well-known town that draws visitors and sea-changers attracted to its scenic bay views and proximity to Freycinet National Park. It holds the distinction of being one of Australia's oldest municipalities, established in 1821, and much of its colonial character is preserved in its streetscape and heritage buildings.
The town offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle with a range of local amenities along its main street, including Morris' General Store — a landmark owned by the same family for over a century — as well as the Swansea Bark Mill museum, tavern and bakery. Residents and visitors alike enjoy easy access to Freycinet National Park, home to the iconic Wineglass Bay, as well as wildlife including little penguins, short-tailed shearwaters, and the wildlife-rich waters of Great Oyster Bay. Swansea suits retirees, lifestyle seekers, and those drawn to small-town coastal living with a strong sense of history.
Swansea falls under postcode 7190 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
