About Tallangatta Valley
Tallangatta Valley is a rural locality in the Shire of Towong in north-east Victoria, situated approximately 340 kilometres north-east of Melbourne in the upper reaches of the Tallangatta Creek catchment. The locality covers a very large area of around 378 square kilometres and is characterised by a high-rainfall farming zone with mountain and valley views typical of this picturesque part of the Victorian Alps foothills. With a small population of around 194 residents, it is a sparsely settled locality where primary production — particularly livestock grazing and pasture farming — defines the local economy.
The township of Tallangatta, the administrative centre of Towong Shire, is the nearest service town providing schools, shops, and community facilities. The Murray Valley Highway connects the region to Wodonga to the west, while the landscape of undulating hills and cleared valleys creates a scenic, peaceful setting popular with those seeking a rural lifestyle or agricultural land. Tallangatta Valley offers a genuine high-country farming experience, with cool winters, spectacular autumn colours, and easy access to the broader north-east Victoria region including Lake Hume and the Kiewa and Mitta Mitta valleys.
Tallangatta Valley falls under postcode 3701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gippsland East (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
