About Walgett

Walgett is a remote town in northern New South Wales, located 691 kilometres northwest of Sydney at the junction of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers. With a population of around 1,400 in town (2,100 in the broader area), it serves as the administrative centre of Walgett Shire. The town has a significant Aboriginal population and is on the traditional lands of the Gamilaroi people. Walgett's name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning "the meeting place of two rivers."

Walgett is a service centre for the surrounding pastoral and agricultural district, with cotton, wheat, and grazing being key industries. The town features essential amenities including a hospital, schools, supermarket, and sporting facilities. The Barwon and Namoi rivers provide fishing opportunities, and the flat, arid landscape is characteristic of outback New South Wales. The Lightning Ridge opal fields are located 74 kilometres to the north. Walgett experiences a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters.

Walgett falls under postcode 2832 and is governed by Walgett Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barwon electorate.
