About Balgowan
Balgowan is a small coastal locality on the western shore of South Australia's Yorke Peninsula, within the Yorke Peninsula Council local government area. Situated approximately 20 kilometres west of Maitland and around 165 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, the locality sits on elevated bluffs overlooking Spencer Gulf. At the 2021 Census, Balgowan recorded a population of 92 residents, though this figure swells considerably during summer and school holiday periods when visitors flock to the area.
Once a busy government shipping port surveyed in 1878 and named after a town in Perthshire, Scotland, Balgowan is now a popular fishing and holiday destination with a relaxed, unhurried character. The locality is particularly well regarded for catching snapper and King George whiting, and a well-maintained boat ramp supports recreational fishing and boating. A community kiosk offers coffee, food, and takeaway for visitors, and a general store serves the local community's basic needs. Balgowan attracts families, retirees, and holiday-home owners who are drawn to its clifftop sea views, quiet beaches, and easy access to the broader Yorke Peninsula coastline.
Balgowan falls under postcode 5573 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
