About Weetulta
Weetulta is a small inland rural locality in South Australia's Yorke Peninsula, situated approximately 162 kilometres west-northwest of Adelaide along the Spencer Highway between the towns of Maitland and Moonta, within the Yorke Peninsula Council area. The locality covers around 118 square kilometres and had a 2021 Census population of 69 residents, reflecting its character as a quiet, agricultural community set among flat to gently undulating farmland typical of the central Yorke Peninsula. Weetulta's name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal term meaning 'reedy place', acknowledging the country's deep connection to the Narungga people.
Farming — predominantly grain cropping on calcareous loam soils — is the backbone of life in Weetulta, with the Spencer Highway providing the main link to neighbouring service centres. The locality has a small community church that remains active, and is known locally for its annual strawberry fete, a long-running community tradition that draws visitors from across the peninsula. Residents access everyday services including supermarkets, schools, and medical facilities in Maitland, approximately 15 kilometres to the south, while the larger Copper Triangle towns of Kadina, Wallaroo, and Moonta are within easy reach to the north.
Weetulta falls under postcode 5573 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
