About Bletchley
Bletchley is a small rural locality in the northern Fleurieu Peninsula region of South Australia, situated within the Alexandrina Council area approximately 8 kilometres east of Strathalbyn and around 55 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. With a population of 76 in the 2021 Census and covering an area of nearly 23.6 square kilometres, Bletchley is a quiet farming community with a long pastoral history. The locality was named in 1853 by early settler David Jones after his home town in England, and once supported a Wesleyan church and post office, reflecting a more active community in its earlier years.
The landscape around Bletchley is characterised by rolling hills typical of the Fleurieu Peninsula hinterland, with land used primarily for sheep and cattle grazing, cropping, and mixed farming. Residents travel to the nearby town of Strathalbyn for shopping, schools, medical services, and community facilities. The region benefits from its position within reach of both Adelaide and the Fleurieu's wine and tourism offerings, though Bletchley itself has a distinctly agricultural character. A private vehicle is essential for daily life in this rural locality.
Bletchley falls under postcode 5255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
