About Hartley
Hartley is a historic ghost town and rural locality in the Alexandrina Council area of South Australia, situated along the Bremer River on the Strathalbyn-Callington Road in the Fleurieu Peninsula region. It lies approximately 15 kilometres north-east of Strathalbyn and 11 kilometres south of Callington, and falls under the federal division of Mayo. Founded in 1853 as a small rural settlement, Hartley once supported a Methodist church, post office, school, and creamery before gradually declining; today, the town is little more than scattered ruins and farmhouses, with a 2021 Census population of 149 across its 74 square kilometres.
The area around Hartley is characterised by rolling agricultural land along the Bremer River corridor, offering quiet rural scenery typical of the southern Fleurieu. Its historical significance lies in its 19th-century settlement heritage, with remnant structures marking its former community life. Those who live in the locality today tend to be farmers and rural residents who appreciate the isolation and pastoral character of the area. Strathalbyn, with its well-regarded heritage streetscape, shops, schools, and services, is the nearest town of substance and is easily accessible by a short drive.
Hartley falls under postcode 5255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
