About Finniss
Finniss is a small rural settlement on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, situated approximately 55 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and 13 kilometres north of Goolwa within the Alexandrina Council area. Originally surveyed in 1867 as Queen's Own Town, the settlement was renamed Finniss in 1940 in honour of Colonel Boyle Travers Finniss, one of South Australia's early surveyors and its first Premier. With a population of around 293 and an area of nearly 99 square kilometres, Finniss retains a peaceful rural character set among gently undulating farmland near the Finniss River.
The locality sits along the historic Victor Harbor railway line, connecting it to the broader Fleurieu Peninsula and the resort town of Goolwa, a short drive to the south. Residents enjoy the tranquil rural surrounds of the Fleurieu Peninsula, with easy access to the Goolwa/Currency Creek wine region, Lake Alexandrina, and the Coorong National Park. Finniss appeals to those seeking a quiet country lifestyle within reach of both the Fleurieu's natural attractions and the services of larger nearby towns like Goolwa and Strathalbyn.
Finniss falls under postcode 5255 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
