About Marananga
Marananga is a small historic locality nestled in South Australia's celebrated Barossa Valley, approximately 4 kilometres north-west of Tanunda and around 70 kilometres north-east of Adelaide within the Light Regional Council area. With a population of 119 residents across just 6.4 square kilometres, Marananga is one of the most intimate localities in the Barossa, yet punches well above its weight in cultural and tourism significance. The locality was formerly known as Gnadenfrei — meaning 'grace and freedom' in German — until 1918, when the name was changed as part of a broader movement to replace German place names during World War I.
Marananga is firmly established as a boutique destination within the Barossa wine country, home to renowned wineries including Greenock Creek Wines and Two Hands Wines, the Seppeltsfield Road Distillers gin distillery, and acclaimed dining at Appellation restaurant within The Louise, one of Australia's most celebrated regional retreats. The locality's name means 'My hands' in the language of the Overland Corner Aboriginal people, honouring the region's deep Indigenous heritage. Visitors and residents alike are drawn to the tranquil vineyard landscapes, rich German-Lutheran heritage buildings including the historic Gnadenfrei Lutheran Church, and the exceptional food and wine experiences on offer.
Marananga falls under postcode 5355 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
