About Moppa
Moppa is a small rural locality in the Barossa wine region of South Australia, situated approximately 5 kilometres north-west of Nuriootpa and about 64 kilometres north-northeast of Adelaide, within the Light Regional Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 69 residents spread across 21.7 square kilometres, Moppa is a quiet, sparsely settled locality characterised by expansive vineyards, dry-stone walls, and working farmland. The area carries a strong sense of heritage, with many properties in the region passed through families for multiple generations.
Moppa is widely regarded as one of the most historic and premium sub-regions within the Barossa Valley, home to some of the oldest vines in the world — including Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon plantings dating back to the 1800s. The elevated terrain, reaching over 300 metres, provides cooler growing conditions that support long, steady ripening and produce fruit of exceptional quality. Residents rely on nearby Nuriootpa and Tanunda for everyday services, shopping and dining, while the broader Barossa Valley offers a world-class cellar door and tourism scene just minutes away.
Moppa falls under postcode 5355 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Schubert electorate.
