About South Innisfail
South Innisfail is a locality on the southern fringe of Innisfail in Far North Queensland, within the Cassowary Coast Regional Council area. With a population of approximately 508 residents, it occupies 6.9 square kilometres of mixed land use including residential areas, sugarcane cultivation, and wetland vegetation along the South Johnstone River corridor. The suburb sits in one of Australia's wettest regions, benefiting from the lush tropical environment of the wet tropics zone between Cairns and Townsville.
South Innisfail shares in the rich multicultural heritage of the broader Innisfail area, which has historically been shaped by Italian, Greek, and Maltese immigration to the sugarcane industry from the early 20th century, alongside a significant Indigenous community. Radiant Life College, established in 1983, provides schooling for the area and reflects the community's faith-based roots. Innisfail township, immediately to the north, provides shops, schools, medical services, and the unique Art Deco architecture for which the region is famous.
South Innisfail falls under postcode 4860 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hill electorate.
