About Tunbridge
Tunbridge is a small rural locality in central Tasmania, spanning the local government areas of Northern Midlands and Southern Midlands, approximately 24 kilometres north of Oatlands and roughly 90 kilometres north of Hobart. With a population of around 123 residents spread across its 130 square kilometre area, Tunbridge is one of the more sparsely settled localities along Tasmania's Midland Highway corridor. The landscape is characterised by open pastoral farmland and the gently rolling terrain typical of the Tasmanian Midlands.
Tunbridge has historic significance as a former coaching stop on the original Hobart to Launceston road, and the locality takes its name from one of the three coaching inns that once served travellers along the route — the Tunbridge Wells inn, itself named after the English town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Today the area is predominantly agricultural, with sheep grazing and mixed farming on the surrounding properties. Oatlands and Ross, both of which feature rich colonial heritage and basic services, are the nearest towns, while Launceston and Hobart are accessible within an hour and a half via the Midland Highway.
Tunbridge falls under postcode 7120 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
