About Wonboyn
Wonboyn is a remote coastal hamlet on New South Wales' Far South Coast, nestled within the Ben Boyd National Park approximately 35 kilometres south of Eden and 490 kilometres from Sydney. With a 2021 census population of around 130 residents, the settlement hugs the shores of Wonboyn Lake, a stunning coastal waterway that opens to the Tasman Sea. The area is part of the Bega Valley Shire and lies within the federal electorate of Eden-Monaro, known for its wilderness landscapes and national park coverage. Wonboyn's isolated position gives it an unspoiled, end-of-the-earth character unlike anywhere else in New South Wales.
Wonboyn is a paradise for anglers, kayakers, and nature seekers, with Wonboyn Lake offering calm waters for boating and swimming, and the adjacent Ben Boyd National Park providing extensive bushwalking through coastal heath and forest. The hamlet has a small general store and boat hire, with residents travelling to Eden for supermarkets, medical services, and schools. It attracts retirees, lifestyle seekers, and holiday home owners drawn by some of the most pristine waterways on the New South Wales coast.
Wonboyn falls under postcode 2551 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
